Identity in Diaspora:

Como Se Dice Collective

Como Se Dice, who first formed at Sparrow in November 2023, is coming back to Sparrow with a much expanded collective!

MEET THE ARTISTS: Thurs-Sat 11am-6pm

Como Se Dice translates to “How do you say?” in Spanish. This question is often exchanged by first-generation immigrants asking how to express something in English. Likewise, second-generation immigrants use the phrase to ask how to translate something into Spanish. This question reflects our experiences of navigating language and culture, but it also speaks to the importance of community in that process. To ask is to need another’s knowledge in our shaping and understanding of the world. Likewise, the theme Identity in Diaspora prompts us to explore how we co-author our becoming, and how we understand our narratives and our place within them.

In addition to creating individual work, we aim to bridge the gap between artist and audience, and facilitate connections between social groups by maintaining a welcoming drop-in space, and providing accessible arts programming. To close the residency, we will host a community art day where local artists can present their work alongside ours. Through this gathering, we hope to celebrate the communities and people that have supported us.
